Facts about the Amazon River

The Amazon is the second longest river in the world, stretching from the Peruvian Andes to the Atlantic Ocean, nearly 4,000 miles. Although it is second in length to the Nile, no other river comes close in the amount of water it carries to the Atlantic Ocean - about 20% of all of the waters flowing in the rivers of the world flows in the Amazon.

As the Amazon lies on the Equator and mostly in the rain forest areas, it controls the main flow of the water from this area. The river has 17 primary tributaries - each of which are over 1,000 miles long. In addition to its normal flow, the rainy season finds the river even wider and deeper, with the widest area measuring around 6.8 miles wide. The river system is the lifeline of the forest.

Founded in 1669 by Spanish explorers, the main city on the Amazon is Manaus. In their exploration, the Spaniards noticed fresh water 200 miles out to sea and followed it to the mouth of the river and upstream. Manaus is now a city of nearly 2 million residents and a major economic center of Northern Brazil.

Freshwater Fish and Pink Dolphins

The largest fresh water fish and snakes are inhabitants of the Amazon. Catfish have been caught that weigh over 200 pounds. The World’s largest freshwater fish, the Arapaima, can get up to 440 pounds. That is a lot of sushi!

Probably, the most popular inhabitant of the Amazon River are the Pink Dolphins. Highly intelligent and friendly, they are a favorite highlight for travelers...perhaps an incredible swim with these wonders of nature. Smaller than most ocean dolphins, they do not have the normal dorsal fin and can also maneuver their necks around, unlike other dolphins.

Manaus Facts

Manaus is located at the mouth of the upper Amazon where the Negro and Solimoes rivers meet and form the larger section of the Amazon. Founded in 1669 by Spanish explorers, Manaus became famous because of its rubber trade during the late 19th century. Rubber barons made it "one of the grandest cities in the World". The major attraction to last from this heyday is the Teatro Amazonas Opera House; recently restored, it is again hosting performances.

Today Manaus is a vibrant city of nearly 2 million residents and is the commercial center for the Amazon. Lumber, Brazil nuts, petroleum refining and numerous manufacturing companies are a staple for most of the industrial and commercial businesses. The airport is Eduardo Gomes International and offers domestic and international airline flights.

This area offers many yearly festivals:

  • Amazonas Carnival - February
  • Ponta Negra's Music Festival - May
  • Amazonas Opera Festival - May
  • Amazonas Folklore Festival - June
  • Amazonas Jazz Festival - July
  • Anniversary of Manaus - October 24
  • Amazonas Film Festival - November
  • Christmas Festival - December
  • New Year's Eve festival - December
